How often should you really sweep your chimney?
It's the question we get asked more than any other — and the honest answer is: it depends on what you burn. Here's the straight guidance, with no upselling.
There's a lot of vague advice out there. Some say once a year, some say twice, and the truth is that a single number can't cover every home. What matters is the fuel you burn, how often you use the fire, and the condition of the flue itself. Get those right and you keep your home safe and your appliance running efficiently.
The general guidance by fuel
As a rough rule, the National Association of Chimney Sweeps and most manufacturers point to the following minimums:
- Wood & bituminous (house) coal: up to four times a year — these produce the most soot and creosote.
- Smokeless fuels: at least once a year.
- Gas appliances: at least once a year, where the design allows for sweeping.
- Oil: once a year.
If you use your fire heavily through winter, or you're burning wood that isn't properly seasoned, you'll need sweeping more often than the minimum. A flue that's left too long is a flue that's building towards a problem.
Why frequency matters
Every time you burn solid fuel, soot and creosote deposit on the inside of the flue. Left to build up, they restrict the draught, make the fire harder to light and burn less efficiently — and in the case of glazed creosote, they become a genuine chimney-fire risk. Regular sweeping keeps the flue clear, the draw strong and the danger down.
The cheapest insurance you'll ever buy for a wood-burner is a regular sweep. It costs less than a tank of fuel and it could save your home.
The best time to book
Most people leave it until the first cold snap, which is exactly when every sweep in the region is fully booked. Sweeping at the start of the season — late summer or early autumn — means you walk into winter ready, with any issues found while there's still time to fix them. A second sweep mid-season is wise for heavy burners.

The bottom line
Sweep wood and house coal up to four times a year, everything else at least annually, and more often if you burn heavily. When in doubt, ask a registered sweep who'll tell you straight. That's exactly the standard we hold ourselves to on every visit.
