Reclaiming an overgrown garden: where to start

When a garden has got away from you, the whole thing can feel impossible. It isn't — it just needs tackling in the right order.

Life happens. A garden that was tidy a couple of summers ago can become a wall of brambles, knee-high grass and self-seeded everything before you've quite noticed. Whether it's your own plot that ran wild, a rental between tenants, or a property you've taken on, the good news is that almost any garden can be brought back. Here's how we approach it.

1. Assess before you cut

The first job is to look, not slash. We walk the whole space to find what's hiding in the growth — paths, beds, edging, taps, drains, and anything worth keeping. It's easy to destroy a good shrub or trip on a forgotten step when you go in blind.

2. Knock it back in stages

Clearance works best top-down and in layers: brambles and tall growth first, then the grass and undergrowth, then the ground-level weeds. Working in stages keeps it controlled and means we can adjust as features reappear.

You don't clear an overgrown garden in one swing. You do it methodically, layer by layer, until the bones of the space come back.

3. Deal with the waste properly

This is where a lot of clearances go wrong. A jungle of a garden produces an enormous volume of green waste, and the temptation for some is to pile it up or worse, dump it. As a registered waste carrier, everything we remove is taken away and disposed of legally and responsibly — your duty of care covered, nothing left behind, nothing fly-tipped.

4. Reveal and tidy

With the bulk gone, the real transformation shows: edges defined, beds cleared, grass cut back to something manageable. Often a garden people had written off turns out to have great structure under all the chaos.

5. Make it maintainable

The last step is the one that lasts: a plan to keep it that way. Whether that's a regular maintenance visit or just honest advice on what to do next, the aim is that you never have to face the jungle again.

The same standard, outdoors

A full clearance is hard graft, but it's exactly the kind of job that rewards a methodical, disciplined approach — and a refusal to cut corners on the bit nobody sees, like disposing of the waste the right way. That's the standard we bring to every garden, however wild it starts out.
